Derby Day Nursery

Kingfisher Day Nurseries Derby and Nottingham!
Welcome to our nurseries!

Thank you for enquiring about one of our nurseries. We are a small group of day nurseries aiming to provide the highest quality care for your child with our dedicated team of professionals.

The Nursery Environment

All our children are based in age banded rooms to ensure we can meet their needs. Children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage which ensures they are learning through play, tailored to their individual needs and development. Our rooms are large, bright and airy and offer a wide range of activities on a daily basis i.e. creative play, sand, water, imaginative and construction areas, along with quieter areas for relaxation and concentration. There are also well stocked outdoor areas.

Meals

Our nurseries provide a range of nutritious meals to meet your child’s daily requirements. All meals are cooked on the premises using fresh produce wherever possible. Please see our menu’s displayed in nursery for further details.

Staff

Our nurseries have experienced and well qualified staff teams which go far beyond the basic OFSTED requirements. Several staff have obtained or are working towards a degree in Early Years Education to enable us to offer a higher standard of care and education and keep up to date with current theories in practice.

Opening Hours

We are open 7.30am-6.00pm, Monday to Friday, except Bank Holidays and one week at Christmas

Outdoor Environment

We offer a full curriculum outside as well as inside. Children are given the opportunity for large physical activities including climbing, cars and bikes, trampolines, ball games etc. They are also encourages to develop their senses and understanding of the environment through sensory activities, growing, and wet weather play. With parents permission we also explore the local environment.

Social Events

Each of our nurseries are a community in themselves. We see parents and other family members as an initial part of this community. Our nurseries hold special events throughout the year to meet together and share your child’s ‘nursery years’. These events include family fun days, parents evenings, grandparent’s tea party, parent partnerships weeks, Christmas shows etc.

SPONDON

Our Spondon nursery is split over 2 sites. The 0-3’s are in our Chapel St building and 3-5’s have their own classroom in the grounds of Springfield Primary School.

Our 0-3’s have a small, home from home environment which caters very much for children’s individual needs. As they reach the age of 3 they move to our Pre-school.

At our Pre-School unit children are prepared for school through more structured activities delivered through play.

Management and Staff

The nursery is run by Karen Lloyd. She has worked in nurseries for 12 years and has worked her way to a management position. As well as her Level 3 Childcare qualification she has also carried out training and taken on roles as Health and Safety Officer and Special Educational Needs Co-oordinator. She is the mother of 3 children. Karen is supported by a well qualified and experienced staff team.

Quality Assurance

Karen and her team have been undertaking the Derby City ‘Steps to Quality’ quality assurance scheme. This has entailed scrutinizing different areas of work within the nursery and developing it to the highest standard. Areas passed so far are management, learning and teaching, staffing, and environment. This scheme means the nursery is operating well above the standards set by Ofsted. They are now working on the final area to complete the award.

New Developments

Out outdoor play area for 0-3 years has recently undergone a makeover and now boasts safety surfacing and a range of sensory equipment for children to explore.

After School and Holiday Club

We take and collect children to St Werburghs and Springfield Primary Schools. Our holiday club runs in all holidays and is based in the preschool classroom. Here we offer activities for the older age group.

DERBY

The Derby Kingfisher is the largest of the three nurseries. It is based in a very large Victorian property with spacious, airy rooms. Children are based in age groups areas with dedicated Key Workers in each room. The nursery has been undergoing a refurbishment programme over the last year and can now boast some special features such as a sensory room and safety surfacing in the outdoor play area.

Playgroup

The nursery has a separate playgroup which operates 9.30am – 3.00pm, term time only for children aged 2 – 5 years. Children of 3 and 4 can access free government funded sessions in our playgroup. Playgroup children also have access to the sensory room and large outdoor play area.

Sensory Room

We have a dedicated Sensory Room for all children to access. It boasts large bubble tubes, UV lighting, sound wall, special effects projector and mirror ball to name a few. Children have hands on experiences in this room and learn to control the different effects in the room by use of technology.

The nursery is run by Claire Holmes. Claire has been employed at the nursery for over 12 years and is a mother herself. She is supported by Katy, Deputy Manager and Karen, Senior Nursery Nurse. The staff team are a long serving group, with staff turnover very low.

Coming Soon...

We are currently working on plans to transform a playroom into a small soft play area. It will be fitted with a play frame and have a selection of soft play shapes. This will give us the added bonus of physical play even in bad weather.

After School and Holiday Club

We take and collect children to schools and educational nurseries in the local area. We also offer a Holiday Club for 4-12 year olds in the school holidays. We offer our older children exciting activities as well as lots of trips out and about.
